Relief distributed to families of deceased, death toll rises

By Raju Lamichhane,Rukum West, Nov. 11: The District Administration Office, Rukum West, has started distributing compensation to the families of those individuals, who died in Jajarkot earthquake on Friday. 

A team of District Administration Office (DAO) officials personally reached the houses of the deceased to provide the compensation. Each grieving family is receiving Rs. 200,000 as a compensation. 

Chief District Officer (CDO) Hari Prasad Panta informed that the compensation has been handed over to close legal beneficiaries of the deceased.

According to him, a compensation of Rs. 200,000 has been provided per deceased individual, in accordance to the guidelines of the Disaster Victims Rescue Relief Standard 2077.

In case of multiple deaths within a single family, a compensation of Rs. 200,000 has been provided to deceased individual, and Rs. 100,000 has been provided for each additional deceased person, he added. 

On the first day, compensation amounting to Rs. 2.5 million was disbursed to nine families of 16 deceased individuals on Friday

CDO Panta informed that the relief was distributed to the families of 10 deceased individuals from Sanibheri Rural Municipality and 14 deceased individuals from Chhepare village of Aathabiskot Municipality. 

The compensation has been 

provided as per the decision of the government. 

A team of DAO officials, people’s representatives and chief of security agencies handed over the compensation by reaching the houses of the earthquake victims, who lost both family members and homes, said Panta. 

Panta informed that the relief would be handed over to the remaining families of the deceased on Saturday. 

A total of 52 individuals in Rukum West lost their lives in the devastating earthquake that struck Jajarkot last Friday. One more person succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment on Friday. Police Constable of Chaurjahari Municipality, Niroj Bista, died on Friday while undergoing treatment at Karnali Provincial Hospital, Surkhet. 

With this, the death toll in Rukum West due to the earthquake has  reached 53.
