Vehicles forced to commute over dilapidated bridge

blog

By Our Correspondent, Humla, Nov.1; Vehicles are forced to cross the Hekpa River along the Simkot-Hilsa section of the Karnali Corridor through a dilapidated wooden bridge which has not been repaired or replaced for two years.

“The wooden bridge was constructed two years ago. The bridge is getting riskier to cross. However, since it is the only option, we try to cross it with fear every time,” said Singam Bhandari, a jeep driver. Bhandari added, “The passengers cross the bridge on foot because of the fear. It is a great relief when I cross the bridge.”

Kumar Thapa, another jeep driver, informed that the vehicle tilted while crossing the bridge. “The wooden bridge can collapse anytime. The authorities should either repair it or replace it,” stressed Thapa.

Over 40 vehicles on average cross the bridge on a daily basis. The wooden bridge was constructed by the Infrastructure Development Office. The Hilsa-Simkot Road Project also looks after the section. However, both the authorities have not taken any steps to repair the wooden bridge.

Meanwhile, a concrete bridge has been under construction for two years over the Hekpa River.
