Autopsy service launched at Bardibas Hospital

blog

By Rabindra Upreti,Bardibas, Oct. 5After persistent efforts and wait of Bardibas Municipality, the autopsy service has now begun at Bardibas Hospital.

An autopsy, also known as a post-mortem examination, is a specialized surgical procedure used to determine the cause and manner of death.  On Wednesday, the hospital initiated its autopsy service by conducting the first post-mortem examination on Kaji Karki, a 52-year-old resident of Gauridanda, Bardibas-3, who lost his life in a road accident.

With the commencement of the post-mortem service in Bardibas, it is anticipated that residents from seven local levels, including Gaushala, Aurahi, Bhangaha Sitapur, Sonama, and Samasi in the northern part of Mahottari district, as well as Mithila Municipality in Dhanusha district, will now have access to this vital service.

Previously, autopsy service was only available at Jaleshwor Hospital, district headquarters of Mahottari. Due to this, the grieving family of the deceased had no choice but to travel 70 km to Jaleshwor for the post-mortem service.

Speaking at the programme held on the hospital premises to inaugurate the post-mortem service, Mayor Prahlad Chhetri said that with the launch of the post-mortem service at Bardibas Hospital, the bereaved families are now relieved from the burden of transporting deceased bodies to Jaleshwor and Janakpur for the service.

He mentioned that the newly introduced service in a hospital located outside the district headquarters not only brought convenience to the people but also upheld principles of humanity and human sensibilities.

"In order to enhance and ensure the safety of the post-mortem service, we are currently in the process of constructing a police station within the hospital premises,” he said.    Additionally, an initiative to install a separate transformer to address the irregularity of power supply is also underway, Chhetri explained.

Chairman of Bardibas Hospital management committee Jaya Narayan Phuyal said the service was started after nearly a year of consistent efforts.

According to him, the committee has invested over Rs. 1 million in establishing the infrastructure for the post-mortem service.  Dr. Krishna Maharjan, medical superintendent of the hospital, said the post-mortem service commenced at the hospital following the approval from the government to operate the clinical medico-legal examination service.

The hospital administration officially announced the commencement of the service, after the first postmortem was conducted by Dr. Ashok Kumar Sah and Dr. Bibek Das.

Since its establishment in the year 2064, the 50-bed Bardibas Hospital, which had been turned into a 'referral' hospital due to political and administrative neglect, has started providing specialist services since last January.  Consequently, the services offered by this hospital have gained a reputation for being relatively accessible, reliable, and exemplary.

Sumitra Bomjon, 40 of Betal, Khairmara-10, who reached Bardibas Hospital, said the beginning of the post-mortem services at the hospital marked the realization of a long-awaited dream for the local community.  Chandika Adhikari, senior nurse at the hospital, announced that Bardibas Hospital has expanded its services with the introduction of 10 new medical units.

Following the initiation of post-mortem services, Bardibas Hospital now offers a total of 27 health services.
