Pokhara, March 10 : The exquisite Nepal made carpet named 'Natural Textile Carpet' will be put on exhibition in international market.
The carpet prepared by 25 women of Mahila Sip Bikas Sanstha over the period of six months measures 16 metres in length (and breadth?), according to Sanstha's founder executive director Ramkali Khadhka.
The carpet is exhibited in Pokhara in support of the Pokhara Metropolitan City marking the International Women's Day on last March 8.
The hand-knotted chemical-free carpet is made up of cotton thread and fruits juice, according to the makers who are hopeful that the carpet would be able to introduce Nepali product in world market.
Made in support of the British Council, the carpet features various drawings and maps. Through a specific mobile App, the viewers could know more about the raw materials used in making of the carpet as well as the stories of the women who made it.
Apart from the carpet, other small carpets measuring from 1.5 metres to various lengths are also made. The British Council coordinated with the Sanstha to offer an opportunity of a dignified living to the single women, conflict-hit women, violence survivors and women with disabilities as well as women from disadvantaged group among others where they earn their livelihood cashing on their skills.
According to Khadka, they have not fixed the price of the carpet since it was for exhibition and not for sale. "We will begin with the UK for exhibition of this carpet. If there is demand for the carpet after the exhibition, we will produce commercially and fix the rate accordingly." (RSS)
