Kathmandu, Feb 19 : A variety of programs are being held across the country today to celebrate Democracy Day, in commemoration of the day when the Nepali people stood against the then autocratic Rana regime subsequently establishing democracy for the first time in the country.
As a result of the struggle and
sacrifices of the ordinary Nepali people, the Rana regime ended on Falgun 7,
2007 B.S. beginning a new era of democracy. Notably Shukraraj Shastri, Gangalal
Shrestha, Dasharath Chand, Dharmabhakta Mathema and others sacrificed their
lives to liberate their fellow Nepalis from the autocratic rule.
Reminding the importance of
Democracy Day, the President, the Vice-President, the Prime Minister and the
leaders of the major political parties have extended their greetings to all
while also paying tributes to the martyrs on this historical occasion.
A special ceremony is being held at
Tundikhel in the federal capital later today in presence of the President, the
Vice President, the Prime Minister and other dignitaries. (RSS)
