By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Dec. 31: With the objectives encouraging independent learning and supporting academic, cultural and emotional growth of students, Um Hong Gil Human Foundation (UHGHF) distributed eight buffaloes worth Rs. 460,000 to eight students studying in Sundi Secondary School located in Mayadevi Rural Municpality of Rupandehi district. Those students stood out first and second positions in a book review contest organised by the school on December 29.
The distribution of buffaloes is a livelihood support for the students. More than 90 per cent of them are from underprivileged Terai communities. Likewise, 20 other participants received a total of Rs. 88, 000 in cash prize along with certificates for their active participation in the book review competition.
This was the third book review ceremony organised by the school. The school had held the first book review event in 2019 and the second one in 2021. The school has been organising such events with the financial support from UHGHF, a Seoul-based social organisation dedicated to contributing to the education sector in Nepal.
According to a press release issued by UHGHF, this year’s book review ceremony was organised in the presence of a team from South Korea, including Captain Um Hong Gil, Chief Executive Officer of Aram Hubis, Park Dong Soon, Lee Sang Ho from Soul University, advisor and retired Korean Army General Park Mun Sik.
Representatives from Mayadevi Rural Municipality, school management committee, teachers, parents and students were also present in the event. Distributing the prizes and certificates, Captain Um, a legendary Korean alpinist and honorary citizen of Nepal, asked the students to focus on learning. With the support from UHGHF, the school possesses an ICT lab and a library with more than 7,500 books. A couple of years back, the philanthropic organisation had also built quake-resistant modern physical infrastructures for the school. Meanwhile, environment-friendly lead pencils were also handed over to 940 students.
