Kavrepalanchowk, Sept 6It has been seven years since Kavrepalanchowk district was declared self-sufficient in milk production.

Even now, milk is produced in excess of the requirement in the district. The district was declared self-sufficient in milk in 2015. But for the last few years, meat and eggs have been produced in excess of the requirement in the district, yet so far the district has not been declared as self-sufficient in meat and egg production.

Raj Kumar Humagain, acting chief of Veterinary Hospital and Animal Services Expert Centre Kavre, said that due to the lack of procedures, it was not possible to declare the district self-reliant in meat and eggs.

"We don't even have a procedure to declare the district self-sufficient in meat and eggs. We have not been able to declare the district self-sufficient in meat and eggs due to confusion about whether to proceed with this process through the province or through federal departments and ministries," Humagain said.

According to the centre, the annual requirement of meat is 5,136 tonnes in the district, but currently 1,289 tonnes of meat is produced.

About 6,653 tonnes of meat is produced in excess of the requirement in a year in the district.

Similarly, the annual requirement of eggs stands at 17.61 million in the district, but currently 28.6 2 million eggs are being produced.

Likewise, the centre said that about 143.4 million litres of milk is being produced annually against the annual demand of 33.34 million litres. It showed th at about 115 million litres of surplus milk is produced annually in the district.

Humagain said that per person per year availability of milk in the district stands at 391 litres, of meat 33 kilograms and of eggs 78.

But per person per year required amount of milk is 91 litres, of meat 14 kgs and of eggs 48.

He said that the annual production of meat increased by 3 per cent, eggs by 2.5 per cent and milk by 4 per cent last year.
