elected as chairperson and vice-chairperson in Gauriganj Rural Municipality,
Jhapa.
Out of the 15 rural municipalities in the Jhapa district,
Gauriganj has become the first rural municipality where women are elected in
both the posts of chairperson and vice-chairperson.
Nepali Congress candidate Phulwati Rajbanshi has been
elected as the chairperson and Pujan Neupane Kunwar of CPN (UMl) has been
elected as vice-chairperson. Both women are active in the political and social
spheres.
According to the office of the Returning Officer, Gauriganj,
Rajbanshi defeated her closest opponent, Vijay Kumar Agrawal of CPN (UML).
Rajbanshi received 5,689 votes against Agrawal, who received 3,330 votes.
On the other hand, Neupane defeated Makhana Mahato of the
Nepali Congress by receiving 4,755 votes.
