It has been almost three-quarters of a century since we achieved democracy in Nepal. In fact, democracy was attained in Nepal after the Nepalese people overthrew the autocratic Rana regime. It was the great feat of the Nepalese people to mount a struggle against the Rana misrule and topple it for the sake of democracy and the rights of the people.
Nepal’s quest for democracy is long and arduous. From the time of abolishing autocratic Rana rulers in 1950 (Falgun 7, 2007 BS) to compelling the absolute monarch to become a constitutional king in the 1990s and to proclaiming republicanism in 2006/2007, political parties, and pro-democracy masses fought hard to attain democracy. When the huge people’s movement ousted the king in Nepal, democracy started functioning to its fullest.
We commemorate the founding of democracy by having our Democracy Day which we realized on Falgun 7, 2007 BS. I have numerous recollections of the 2007 movement. The Nepali Congress reportedly held protests here and there, according to what we had heard. Yugbani was the name of the newspaper that my uncle used to bring home. We'd read it out several times. This journal used to provide news on political uprisings against the Rana regime's dictatorial authority.
Seven long decades have passed since Nepali people first introduced multiparty democracy in the country by overthrowing the 104-year-old repressive Rana rule on 7th of Falgun 2007 BS. Many brave political leaders and common people had sacrificed their lives for the sake of democracy that ensures freedom to citizens and safeguards their political, economic, socio-cultural and individual rights. On this important occasion, the nation and the people pay their profound tributes to all those who had attained martyrdom in course of fighting for national sovereignty, democracy and rule of law.
Winston Churchill once said: “...democracy is the worst form of government – except for all the others that have been tried.” It is quite perplexing as to why Churchill made such a cynical remark about democracy so cherished notion of our time. Churchill was the popular wartime British Prime Minister who successfully steered the nation through war but his Conservative Party was badly defeated in the general election in 1945. Two years later, Churchill termed democracy the "worst form of government," perhaps after he was voted out of power.
The nation is celebrating Democracy Day today as an acknowledgement to the achievements of the People's Movement of 1951 which had overthrown the Rana oligarchy to restore multiparty democracy in Nepal. However, the achievements could not last when then King Mahendra seized power in 2017 BS introducing the one-party Panchayat system under absolute monarchy.
Democracy and equality are understood as the two sides of the same coin. Proper practice of democratic rights lead to equality in the society. Such a belief is based on the assumption that democratic values such as the rule of law, periodic elections, free press, and human rights enable people to elect appropriate figures to write laws and govern them, which ultimately create a robust ground for equality. It is because of this belief in democracy's power to create equality

A variety of programs are being held across the country today to celebrate Democracy Day, in commemoration of the day when the Nepali people stood against the then autocratic Rana regime subsequently establishing democracy for the first time in the country.
