As the vote count protracts for the ninth consecutive day after May 13’s local level elections, over 93 per cent results of local bodies have been made public as of Saturday evening. As of 8:00 pm on Saturday, results of 694 of 753 local units have been made public. According to the Election Commission (EC), election results of 247 municipalities, 447 rural municipalities and 6,381 wards have been made public. Altogether 247 mayor/deputy mayors, 447 rural municipalities chairpersons/vice-chairpersons, 6,381 ward chairpersons, 6,377 women ward members, 6,264 Dalit women ward members and 12,757 ward members have been announced elected.
After eight days since the May 13’s local level elections, around 90 per cent results of local bodies have been made public as of Friday. The Election Commission (EC), the body responsible for conducting the election, has aimed to conclude the vote counting by May 24. Talking to The Rising Nepal, the EC’s Assistant Spokesperson Surya Prasad Aryal said the EC has instructed the concerned election offices to conclude the vote counting and publish the final results by May 24.
Ruling Nepali Congress has emerged as the biggest party from the local polls, as it has already won the key posts in the largest number of local bodies while its candidates are leading in more local levels. The main opposition CPN-UML, which had emerged as the largest party winning 294 local units in the 2017 local poll, is trailing behind the NC. Vote count is progressing on the sixth day after Friday’s local level elections. As of 8:41 pm on Wednesday, the NC has won 221 local units and maintained lead in 78 while the UML has won 138.
As the vote count is progressing on the fifth day after Friday’s local level elections, the ruling Nepali Congress has taken lead with more of its candidates getting elected and leading in the counting in the largest number of local bodies across the nation. Candidates of the ruling NC have been elected as chiefs in 160 local levels and they are leading in 134 posts of chiefs.
The country on Friday successfully conducted local level elections nationwide. This local polls is the second of its kind after the country adopted a federal republic system following promulgation of a new Constitution in 2015. The local polls were largely peaceful except for few reports of clashes amid tight security. People throughout the country, including as old as 113-year-old voter, enthusiastically participated in the polls to elect 35,211 representatives of their choice for 753 local units from 145,011 candidates.
A preliminary report of the Election Commission has shown 64 per cent voters’ turnout in the local level election held on Friday. The EC said the local level election concluded in a largely peaceful way. People throughout the country, including the first time voters, elderlies and differently abled among others participated in the election across the country. Voting for the local level elections had begun simultaneously at 7:00 am and concluded at 5:00 pm. However, voting continued even after 5 in some places. “Although sporadic scuffles were reported in some places, the election concluded in a peaceful manner,” Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya told at news briefing immediately after the voting concluded.
Nepal is holding the second local level elections since the promulgation of the Constitution in 2015 in a single phase on May 13 to elect 35,211 representatives for 753 local units, including six metropolitan cities, 11 sub-metropolitan cities, 276 municipalities and 460 rural municipalities. Altogether 55,698 women candidates, 38.4 per cent of total 145,011 candidates, are vying for various posts in local level elections slated for Friday.
The Election Commission (EC) has enforced a ‘silence period’ from Tuesday midnight for the local level elections slated for May 13. The silence period was enforced after completing all logistic and administrative preparations, the EC informed. According to the EC, the silence period starts 48 hours before the polling and will remain till the voting centres are closed. Arrangement has been made to cast vote from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm on the polling day, the EC said.
