HoR Human Rights Committee observes holding centers

Kathmandu, May 10: The Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives has begun observing the holding centers, where landless squatters from unorganized settlements are being housed.

The relocation of squatter settlements along the banks of rivers and tributaries in Kathmandu valley to safer places is underway since April 25. Those who have been relocated have been placed in various holding centers and residential buildings.

The committee members visited the holding centers at the Nepal Electricity Authority Training Center and the Agricultural Development Bank Training Center in Bhaktapur on Saturday and will gradually visit other areas as well, shared Committee Chair Samiksha Baskota.

She said that the committee shall hold discussion on the state of affairs of the holding centers, the service management and the areas of improvements in the coming days and present necessary suggestions and feedback to the concerned bodies.

In the previous meeting of the Committee, members expressed their views on treating the poor, disadvantaged and squatter communities with respect by adhering to the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution, the basic values of humanity, the principles of social justice and the basic standards of international human rights. 

Meanwhile, the Committee will also study and facilitate the work of collecting integrated digital data of the landless being done by the government.(RSS)
