By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Apr. 23: Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal held a meeting with chief whips, whips and representatives from all parties to reach a consensus that adherence to current legal provisions is essential to ensure the dignified and systematic use of diplomatic passports.
The meeting, which was held at Singha Durbar on Wednesday, agreed to strictly enforce existing laws governing the recommendation and use of diplomatic passports, amid growing concern over past misuse.
According to Federal Parliament Secretariat spokesperson Ekram Giri, Speaker Aryal stressed that any decisions related to passports must remain within the boundaries of existing law. He noted that amendments could be pursued in consultation with stakeholders and experts, if necessary, with the aim of promoting more responsible usage.
During the meeting, lawmakers acknowledged that the previous misuse of diplomatic passports had damaged the country’s international reputation, prompting calls for tighter regulation. There was broad agreement on the need for stricter oversight, particularly concerning individuals travelling as part of official delegations.
Lawmakers also highlighted full compliance with the current legal framework and the importance of capacity building for lawmakers alongside the provision of facilities.
They also called for a review of existing policies, arguing that passport misuse had brought disrepute to the nation. MPs urged stricter controls, particularly to prevent misuse by those accompanying high-level delegations.
Giri also informed that the participants agreed that further study is required to refine the scope of diplomatic passport use and the nomination process, including examining international practices. While immediate action will focus on enforcing existing laws, the meeting concluded that long-term reforms and possible legislative amendments will be pursued after broader consultation.
The parties collectively committed to making the use of diplomatic passports more transparent, responsible and consistent with national interests.
