By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Apr. 18: Matatirtha Aunsi, a day dedicated to honouring mothers with deep reverence, devotion and gratitude, was celebrated across the country on Friday.
Observed on Baishakh Krishna Aunsi (new moon day), the day sees sons and daughters across the country presenting their mothers with clothes, sweets, fruits and other gifts as tokens of love and appreciation, while seeking their blessings in return.
Thousands of devotees also throng Matatirtha Kunda, a sacred pond located in Chandragiri Municipality, Kathmandu, to pay homage to their departed mothers.
In memory of their late mothers, large crowds have gathered at Mata Tirtha in Chandragiri Municipality–6 to offer prayers, perform shraddha, and conduct religious rituals.
Krishna Prasad Khadgi, Spokesperson for Chandragiri Municipality, said that the number of people bathing, making donations, performing shraddha, offering tarpan, worshipping and attending the fair has started since 3 am today at Matatirtha.
According to Hindu mythology, those who have lost their mothers can see their mothers’ reflections in the pond on this new-moon day of Baishakh. Devotees offer sweets and flowers at the pond, believing that their offerings will reach their mothers and earn their blessings.
The village of Matatirtha, from which the festival derives its name, holds special significance as a spiritual site for this tradition.
