By Our Correspondent,Nepalgunj, Apr. 17. Police have seized illegal goods worth nearly Rs. 800,000 that were allegedly brought into Nepal by evading customs duties, as security agencies intensify checks along the Nepal-India border following the formation of the new government.
Authorities said law enforcement agencies have recently recorded a series of successes in cracking down on smuggling activities at border crossings. Only a few days ago, the Armed Police Force confiscated illegal goods worth Rs. 3.1 million was brought from India in a single day.
Now, Nepal Police have recovered a further consignment of illicit goods worth around Rs. 766,000 in one day.
According to the District Police Office, Banke, the seized items were smuggled into Nepalgunj after bypassing customs procedures and were confiscated from various locations across the district.
Acting Information Officer Inspector Ramesh Bista said the recovered goods included food items, fruits and vegetables, clothing, goats and sheep, shoes and slippers, stationery products and cosmetics.
He said the total estimated value of the seized items stood at Rs. 766,570 and added that tighter surveillance would be enforced along the border and in other suspected locations.
Inspector Bista said police were working to reduce large-scale illegal imports from India to zero. The District Police Office said all confiscated goods had been sent to the Nepalgunj Customs Office for further legal action.
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police Angur GC, chief of the District Police Office, Banke, said police had launched a special campaign with various plans to curb illegal imports, smuggling and other unlawful activities.
He added that special monitoring had been increased at the Jamunaha border point and surrounding areas, considered a major route for drug trafficking.
