Kathmandu, Apr. 9: The government has increased public transport fares, with the new rates coming into effect from Wednesday.

According to the Department of Transport Management, the adjustment has been made in line with the provision that mandates fare revisions when fuel prices fluctuate by Rs. 5 per litre.

Passenger vehicle fares have risen by 16.71 per cent. Freight charges have also gone up, with a 21.68 per cent increase for goods transport vehicles operating on hilly routes and a 15.75 per cent rise for those plying on Tarai routes, the Department said.

The Department said that fares were last adjusted on January 6, 2025, when the price of diesel stood at Rs. 150.83 per litre.

The revised rates apply only to inter-provincial routes, while fares within a province will be determined by the respective provincial governments.

Electric vehicles (EVs), however, are not subject to the new fare hike.
