Rasuwa, April 7: The recent rainfall has brought hope among the people in Rasuwa for better potato production this year.

The rain and snowfall that occurred on Monday is considered to be source for keeping the land moist for potato. With this, farmers here have expected for better output this time.

According to local farmer Mar Lama from Uttargaya Rural Municipality of northern Rasuwa, snowfall has occurred in the high-altitude areas.

In the past four years, only highlands in the district witnessed the rains. But this time, it occurred around the villages as well, encouraging the farmers.

Potatoes are currently in the tuber formation stage. The recent rainfall has provided the crops with the necessary moisture.

In the Uttargaya area, farmers begin preparing to grow other crops after harvesting potatoes. In the Gatlang area, it is common to cultivate cabbage following the potato harvest.

Farmers report that, due to the rainfall, potatoes will reach the market starting in the month of Asar (mid-June to mid-July), creating additional income opportunities.

Since the Agricultural Development Office of Rasuwa declared Gatlang a potato pocket area in 2070 BS, more than 500 households have been encouraged to engage in potato farming and sales. This year, farmers estimate that production will increase by over 100 tonnes.  (RSS)
