Kathmandu, March 23: A book titled 'Thamelka Sampadaharu' (Heritages of Thamel) - was launched amid a programme organized in the federal capital, Kathmandu.

The Policy Research Institute Nepal, a think tank of the government, published the book that documents rich cultural and historical heritages of tourist hub- Thamel- on Sunday.

Vice Chairperson of the Thamel Tourism Development Council, Sahadev Dhamala, took the initiative to publish the book while heritage researcher Prakriti Adhikari undertook the research and documentation of more than one dozen of heritage sites featured in the book.

The book highlights prominent landmarks such as Thameleshwor Mandir, Maitripur Mahabihar, Natyashwor, Tridevi Mandir, Ashok Stupa and Bhagawan Bahal among other heritages. It also brings to light the lesser-known heritage sites within Thamel such as Bhagawati Mandir, Bhimsenpati, Ga:Hiti, Gunakar Mahabihar, Karunapur Mahabihar, Ta:Hiti Stupa, Shree Gaha Stupa among others.

Tourism entrepreneurs in Thamel describe town not a mere popular commercial hub but as a living repository of cultural heritages.

They note that the area embodies a rich confluence of ancient traditions and both Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. They point out that the Thamel’s narrow alleys, historical architectures, intricate handicrafts, flavorful local cuisine, vibrant music and a tapestry of diverse festivals together reveal the depth of its cultural soul.

Those who wander in its streets go beyond sightseeing to immerse themselves in its living rhythm, experiencing firsthand richness of its lifestyle and heritage.

Speaking during the book launch, Dhamala shared that the book was brought out to inform foreign tourists about the hidden heritages within Thamel.

Similarly, Institute's Chairperson Dr Premraj Neupane expressed his confidence that the newly released book would contribute to promoting Thamel's cultural heritages on the global stage.

Other speakers including former Chairperson of Council, Dr Ramsharan Thapaliya, former Chairperson of ward no 26 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Bishwambharlal Pradham, welcomed the publication, acknowledging it as an important step towards uncovering and promoting the hidden heritages of the Thamel area.
