BY A STAFF REPORTER, Kathmandu, Feb. 19: President Ramchandra Poudel has extended warm greetings to all Nepalis at home and abroad on the occasion of National Democracy Day, paying tribute to known and unknown martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the establishment of democracy.
In a message issued on Wednesday, the President recalled the historic 1950 revolution that ended autocratic rule and secured civil liberties and human rights, stating that the day remains a proud and unforgettable milestone in Nepal’s history. He said the achievements of the federal democratic republic and the present constitution are rooted in the struggles and sacrifices of the people.
Stressing that democracy strengthens social justice, equality and national unity, the President urged citizens to uphold constitutional values and good governance. He also called for active public participation to ensure successful democratic processes and reaffirmed commitment to peace, stability and prosperity.
He said, “Our federal democratic republic is founded on the promise of good governance, development, and prosperity. Let us uphold our Constitution and democracy by ensuring free and successful elections, and honour the sacrifices made for our sovereignty and freedom by striving toward lasting peace, progress, and national unity.”
Meanwhile, Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav also extended best wishes to all Nepalis at home and abroad on the occasion, wishing peace, prosperity and continued progress.
In a message, he recalled that the day, marked on Falgun 7 every year, commemorates the historic achievement of 1950 following the people’s struggle against the 104-year autocratic Rana regime. He paid tribute to martyrs and urged citizens to remain committed to democratic values, social justice and national unity.
Stating that the day reminds us of our responsibility to protect citizens’ rights, ensure equal opportunities, build an equitable society based on social justice, and strengthen the federal democratic republic, the Vice President called for collective efforts to strengthen federal democratic republicanism and ensure development, stability and inclusive progress.
