7th National Children’s Theatre Festival underway

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Feb. 13: The 17th National Children’s Theatre Festival is currently underway at the Russian House in Kathmandu.

The festival, which began on February 9, will conclude on February 14. 

Over the course of six days, audiences are enjoying 18 theatrical productions presented by school theatre groups representing various cities across the country.

Organised as part of more than 16 years of collaboration between the Russian House and Shailee Theatre, the festival aims to nurture children’s creativity and boost their confidence on stage. It also seeks to further strengthen cultural ties between Nepal and Russia.

This year’s edition carries special significance as it forms part of the celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nepal and Russia, as well as the 250th anniversary of the renowned Bolshoi Theatre of Russia.

The opening ceremony was chaired by  N. Budhathoki, President of Shailee Theatre, with eminent Nepali poet and writer L. B. Chhetri attending as Chief Guest. 

The event was also graced by prominent literary and cultural figures, including Ram Babu Subedi, noted writer and poet, Professor Jangab Chauhan, former Ambassador of Nepal to the Russian Federation, and festival advisors Mahesh Paudyal, playwright and Professor at Tribhuvan University, and Pramod Sarang, renowned poet and songwriter.

Following the official inauguration, the festival commenced with a theatrical performance titled ‘Parbati,’ staged by the theatre team of Marigold School, Bhaktapur.

The festival will conclude with an awards ceremony featuring several recognitions, including special prizes for Best Actor and Best Actress. These awards have been instituted in honour of the eminent Russian writer and playwright Anton Chekhov.
