Solar mini-grid collapse plunges Barekot into darkness

blog

By Our Correspondent,Jajarkot, Jan. 12: Residents of Barekot Rural Municipality-5, Khambudanda in Jajarkot have been living in darkness for the past four months due to the non-functional solar mini-grid in the area.

The 200-kilowatt solar mini-grid was damaged by a lightning strike four months ago, leaving the entire locality without electricity.

Since then, locals have been struggling with daily activities, education, and communication, as the mini-grid has yet to be repaired.

According to locals, around 500 households in the area have been affected as the mini-grid has remained non-operational for nearly four months.

Locals have complained that the disruption has also affected students’ studies and various essential services.

They said that when electricity is cut off, they are unable even to charge their mobile phones to stay in contact with their relatives.

The 200-kilowatt solar mini-grid began operation on May 29, 2022. Built with the support of the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre at a cost of approximately Rs. 109 million, the electricity generated from this mini-grid has also been used to operate a Nepal Telecom tower.

Chairman of Barekot Rural Municipality Bir Bahadur Giri said that it took time to complete the necessary procedures for repair after the mini-grid was damaged.

He added that delays occurred due to a lack of clarity regarding who would be responsible for maintenance after the mini-grid was handed over.

It is said that a letter has been sent to the ministry for repair through the District Administration Office, Jajarkot.

However, the locals have become angry as the electricity service has been disrupted for a long time.

According to the locals, the problem is becoming more complicated due to the negligence seen in the alternative energy project.

Locals have even warned that if the concerned authorities do not pay attention soon, they may be forced to

resort to protests.
