Radio journalist Chand passes away

BY A STAFF REPORTER,Kathmandu, Jan. 10: Michael Chand (Harish Chand), the former English newsreader of Radio Nepal and the husband of the first actress of Nepal, Bhuwan Chand, passed away on Friday morning at the age of 77 following a long battle with cancer. 

The news about his death spread like wildfire in social sites, with many of his friends, mostly from film industry, paying tributes to him. 

Chand was one of the most familiar voices in Nepal’s broadcasting history.

He began his career at Radio Nepal in the 1970s and served the institution for nearly 33 years as an English newsreader. Apart from being a newsreader, he gained popularity through the programme Music Hour, which connected him deeply with the audience. 

Chand enriched Nepal's English language journalism through his consistent contributions of articles to The Rising Nepal. 

After retiring from Radio Nepal in 2004, he worked for a considerable period at the Goethe-Institut in Germany.

He is survived by his wife and three daughters. His legacy endures through his voice, writings, and service to Nepali media.
