BY OUR CORRESPONDENT,Rajbiraj, Dec. 26: Police in Saptari district have seized a large quantity of illegal drugs, confiscating more than eight quintals of marijuana and arresting a driver who was attempting to smuggle the contraband into India.
According to police, a joint police team deployed on the basis of special intelligence intercepted the consignment during a check at Lalapatti Tole of Chhinnamasta Rural Municipality-4 on Wednesday. The team, led by a police inspector from the Saptari District Police Office and a sub-inspector from the Area Police Office, Sakhada, stopped and searched a pickup truck heading from Nepal towards India.
During the inspection, police recovered 32 packages of marijuana from the pickup truck bearing registration number Ko 1 Cha 9665. Saptari District Police Office spokesperson and information officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Dambar Bahadur Puri, said the seized marijuana weighed eight quintals, 51 kilograms and 200 grams including plastic packaging, and eight quintals and 32 kilograms excluding the packaging.
The driver of the vehicle, 29-year-old Ram Kumar Yadav of Rajbiraj Municipality-11, has been taken into custody. Police have seized the marijuana, the pickup truck, and the driver, and have launched an investigation under drug-related offences, the District Police Office said.
Further investigation is underway after the Saptari District Court granted a six-day remand, DSP Puri added.
