PM reaffirms Nepal's commitment to UN

A Staff Reporter.Kathmandu, Dec. 18: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has highlighted the partnership between the UN and Nepal and reaffirmed Nepal’s belief in multilateralism, emphasising that cooperation remains the strongest path to peace, dignity, and shared progress. 

Addressing a special ceremony held at the UN House in Pulchowk to mark the 70th anniversary of Nepal–United Nations relations and the 80th UN Day on Wednesday, Prime Minister Karki said that Nepal highly values the support of the United Nations and remains committed to strengthening its partnership with the global body.

She expressed gratitude for the UN’s long-standing contribution to peace, development, and improving the lives of the Nepali people. “Nepal holds the United Nations in high regard. You have been supporting global peace, development, and helping us build a better future. For a long time, the UN has contributed to improving the lives of the people of Nepal, and we deeply appreciate this support,” she said.

She acknowledged the UN’s role in maintaining world peace and uplifting the living standards of Nepalis, reaffirming Nepal’s commitment to remain a strong and reliable partner of the United Nations. Prime Minister stated that Nepal has consistently upheld the principles of the UN Charter since it became the UN member in 1955.

She highlighted that Nepal is one of the largest contributors of troops to UN peacekeeping missions, reflecting the country’s strong commitment to global peace. She also assured that the upcoming elections scheduled for March 5, 2026, would be conducted on time and successfully.

The election preparations are in the final stage, and the overall security situation has significantly improved, she added. Expressing confidence that Nepal will graduate from the status of the Least Developed Country (LDC) by 2026, she emphasised the need for continued UN partnership, investment, and technological support to sustain this achievement.

Stressing the importance of multilateral cooperation in an interdependent world, Prime Minister Karki said Nepal would continue to strengthen its collaboration with the United Nations in the years ahead.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief of Army Staff General Ashok Raj Sigdel highlighted Nepal’s peacekeeping legacy as a reflection of national values, service, sacrifice, and solidarity.

Reflecting on 70 years of UN–Nepal partnership, United Nations Resident Coordinator Hanaa Singer-Hamdy highlighted progress in poverty reduction, maternal health, education, water and sanitation, forest restoration, renewable energy, and post-2015 earthquake recovery in Nepal. 

The event was also attended by Minister for Home Affairs, Om Prakash Aryal, Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Jagdish Kharel, Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security Rajendra Singh Bhandari, Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Shraddha Shrestha, and Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anil Sinha, and chiefs of all security agencies among others.
