By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Dec. 4: Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC) and Aakar Foundation honoured artists with disabilities on the occasion of the 34th International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Wednesday.
They honoured 15 artists who organised an exhibition showcasing powerful and meaningful artworks on November 27, 2025. The workshop was organised by LMC and Aakar Foundation with the objective of promoting creativity, inclusion, and self-expression through art.
Addressing a cultural programme organised by Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Chiri Babu Maharjan, Mayor of LMC, emphasised the need to provide a platform for the artistic talents of people with disabilities.
He stressed that every individual has hidden talents and that parents, teachers, and local governments should create a physical and cultural environment with proper planning and investment to help nurture and develop those talents.
Mayor Maharjan also shared that, for the convenience of people with disabilities in Lalitpur, both new and old infrastructures are being made disability-friendly. He added that priority support is being provided for transportation facilities and opportunities for the economic empowerment of people with disabilities, including through singing, musical instruments, dancing, and painting, so they can showcase their artistic talents.
Children, teenagers, and adults with various disabilities also performed dances, played the flute, and sang at the event.
On the occasion, a painting exhibition featured artworks by child artists with various disabilities, including Saishri Chhetri, Krit Amatya, Rojan Thapa, Uttam Maharjan, Greenesh Tamang, Maulik Bhandari, Pranabaraj Joshi, Sundar Shrestha, Shila Maharjan, Loni Tamang, and others.
Art instructor Kailash Shrestha said he observed that children with disabilities, including autism, have the ability to focus deeply on painting, play with colours, express their emotions through art, and take great joy in creating their works.
Archana Shah, founder of Aakar Foundation Nepal, said the foundation was working to enhance the creative potential of children with disabilities and provide opportunities for their economic empowerment.
