Chitwan, Dec 3: An electric crematorium has been brought into operation in Devghat, a holy religious site on the bank of the Narayani River.

The Built-up Urban and Building Construction Project handed over the crematorium to the Bharatpur Metropolitan City after its completion in October.

The Chief of Disaster Preparedness Section of the Metropolitan City, Bal Krishna Thapaliya, said that the electric crematorium is ready from Tuesday (December 2).

He added that the crematorium was not brought to use until this morning.

According to Thapaliya, nine officials including an electrician, four city police and four sanitation workers have been deployed in two shifts for the operation of the crematorium. The Metropolitan City had provided training to 16 human resources for the same.

The crematorium was made in four kattha (1,352.52 metre square) of land. The project was started on the initiative of the Devghat Area Development Committee (DADC).

The Urban Development Ministry and the Bharatpur Metropolitan City contributed budget for the construction of the crematorium.

Likewise, Mayor of Bharatpur Renu Dahal has urged one and all to contribute to environment protection by cremating dead bodies in electric crematorium.

It costs more than Rs 3,500 to cremate a human dead body, which is half of the total cost incurred from the use of wood, and it takes some 45 minutes to one hour to cremate a human body. The Devghat-based cremation site receives approximately 24 human dead bodies from various districts like Chitwan, Nawalparasi and Tanahun on a daily basis.

The Metropolitan City has formed a monitoring committee under the coordination of Deputy Mayor of Bharatpur, Chitrasen Adhikari. (RSS)
