BY A STAFF REPORTER,Kathmandu, Sep. 27: A unique Nepal Bhasa film based on the mythological and folk story of Harati Maa has been launched, combining centuries-old Daafa Bhajan with modern cinematic storytelling. The nearly one-hour-long musical film is the first of its kind in the Nepal Bhasa sector, weaving the sacred Daafa Bhajan of Harati Maa throughout its entirety.

The film, titled Jaya Shree Harati Maa, and presented by Ghingtang Daafa Society was premiered last Thursday at Ranjana Cineplex, Kathmandu. According to producer Sarada Dangol, the project aims to engage younger generations in Daafa through modern audiovisual storytelling.

Blending music, spirituality, and performance, the film follows the significance of Harati Maa in the Newar community, portraying her role as the protector of children and a revered deity in Newar tradition. On screen, the film features Prema Shakya, Sujan Bajracharya, and Sujina Shahi in leading roles with legendary actor Madan Krishna Shrestha in a special appearance and Bipashyana Shakya and Deshana Shakya as child actors.

Shrestha described the film as one that flows like a river in the Daafa of Harati Maa and praising its smooth storytelling and cultural depth.

Senior filmmaker Prakash Sayami commended the film’s technical execution, stating that despite limited resources and a short production timeline, the creation stands out as a remarkable contribution to Nepal Bhasa’s entertainment sector.

The film was directed and scripted by Darshan Bir Shakya, with the concept developed by Dipendra Muni Bajracharya and Sarada Dangol and production managed by Ujay Shahi. Cinematographer and editor Manoj Ratna Shahi shaped the film’s visual style and gave the work its technical finesse, ensuring both visuals and pacing matched the spiritual tone of Daafa.

More than just a film, Jaya Shree Harati Maa is envisioned as a cultural preservation effort. Its makers explained that while debates may arise over whether it qualifies as a music video, short film, or musical presentation, its main purpose is to preserve and promote Daafa in a format that resonates with modern audiences.

With its artistic storytelling, strong performances, and integration of traditional Daafa music, the film offers both an aesthetic and spiritual experience, highlighting the timeless significance of Harati Maa while opening new possibilities for Nepal Bhasa cinema.
