Police crackdown on drugs

28 held with illegal drugs, a foreigner nabbed with cocaine at TIA

Kathmandu, Aug. 9: In coordinated operations across the country, Nepal Police have arrested 28 individuals, including a foreign national, for possessing and smuggling various illegal drugs.

A 21-year-old Brazilian woman, Emily Mikaele Santosh Ferreira, was arrested on Wednesday from the departure lounge of Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) with 1.95 kg of cocaine. 

Emily had landed at the TIA from Brazil via Doha and was en route to Bhutan when officials from the Narcotics Control Bureau stationed at the TIA intercepted and searched her, recovering the illegal substance. She is currently under investigation under the Narcotic Drugs (Control) Act, 2033, following an extension of custody granted by the Kathmandu District Court.

In another case, Sujan Tamang, 25, of Kakani Rural Municipality, Nuwakot, was arrested on Thursday night from Ananda Tole, Tarkeshwor-11, Kathmandu, with approximately 5.94 kg of cannabis. He was apprehended during a routine motorcycle check by police deployed from Balaju Police Circle. His pillion rider managed to flee and police are searching for him.

Similarly, 36-year-old Nabaraj Nepali of Kavre, residing in Saraswatinagar, Kathmandu-6, was caught with 62 ampoules of Nufin, 56 ampoules of Diazepam, 29 ampoules of Phenergan, and Rs. 2,660 in cash during a search of his rented room by Baudha Police, according to a press statement issued by the Police Headquarters on Friday.

In Hetauda Sub-Metropolitan City-4, Makwanpur, two individuals, Dil Bahadur Sarki, 24, of Udayapur and Dil Bahadur Lo Tamang, 24, of Hetauda-1, were arrested with 6.72 grams of heroin-like substance.

Police also arrested two individuals, including an 18-year-old, from Ratomate checkpoint in Hetauda-15 with 4 kg of cannabis. They were travelling by a bus en route from Chitwan to Birgunj.

In Siraha, Roshan Kumar Yadav, 32, was arrested from Gulariya Chok with 1.26 grams of suspected brown sugar.

In Dhangadhi, Kailali, three individuals, including hotel operator Man Bahadur Thagunna, 22, were arrested from Darchula Hotel with 10.86 grams of heroin-like substance. Meanwhile, Sumit Badi, 28, of Bardagoriya-1 was arrested with 310 mg of a similar substance.

In Kapilvastu, police arrested Hamid Musalman, 45, with 11.81 grams of suspected brown sugar at Maryadapur Bazaar. In another case in Krishnanagar-2, Deep Narayan Kurmi, 46, was found with 2.8 grams of heroin-like substance and Rs. 30,000 cash.

In Bharatpur, Chitwan, Pritam BK, 20, was apprehended at the government hospital with 494 tablets of Tramadol and 194 tablets of Phenergan. Another man, aged 17, was also arrested in Amptarichok with 100 Tramadol tablets.

In Banke, two individuals, Ratiram Tharu, 31, and Kanhaiya Tharu, 29, were arrested from Kohalpur-10 with 330 mg of brown sugar-like substance. Similarly, Imran Teli, 29, of Khajura-7 was caught with 500 mg after a house search.

In Damak, Jhapa, Jyoti Rai Tamang, 26, and three others were arrested with 3.32 grams of heroin-like substance during a raid at Pasang Tamang’s residence, who is currently on the run.

In Jayaprithvi-9, Bajhang, Sher Bahadur Bohara, 32, was arrested with 1.69 kg of hashish from his residence during a police search. In Mahendranagar, Kanchanpur, Lokendra Bahadur Shahi, 34, was arrested on Friday morning from Majhgaun with 33 ampoules of Buprenorphine, 33 of Promethazine, and four Diazepam.

In Satdobato, Lalitpur-15, three individuals, Bir Dhoj Tamang, 38, Jeevan Lama, 28, and Jeevan Tamang, 35, were arrested with 52 ampoules each of Nufin, Phenergan, and Diazepam, along with Rs. 115,428 in cash. The arrests were made by Bhaktapur District Police.

Police officers are conducting further investigations into all the cases, according to the press release of the Police Headquarters.
