Waling, Aug. 9: A team from Bangladesh visited Waling Municipality to learn about the exemplary work being done in waste management. The team conducted an on-site inspection of Waling Municipality's sanitation centre, which has been doing outstanding work in waste management, and exchanged good practices.

Prof. Dr. Rowshan Mamtaz, who came to Waling to learn about fecal sludge management, said, “We had heard that Nepal's Waling Municipality was doing good work in waste management, and now we got to see it firsthand.” She said that Waling's method of utilising waste as a resource was highly impressive.

Deputy Mayor Kabita Tiwari Gaire shared that Waling is the first municipality in Gandaki Province to begin working on fecal sludge management. “The municipality is working in collaboration with an organisation called INFA,” she added. Waling's representatives also exchanged knowledge and experiences with the six-member team, which included professors from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.

As the municipality has developed waste as an economic resource, the number of visitors seeking to understand their model has increased.

According to Mayor Krishna Khan, not only teams from different municipalities across Nepal but also from abroad are coming to observe. The sanitation centre operated by the municipality is increasingly being established as a learning hub. Moving forward with the concept of a smart city, the municipality treats waste as a valuable resource.

Chief Administrative Officer Ganga Lal Subedi stated that the municipality collects biodegradable waste one day, non-biodegradable waste another day, and glass waste once a month.
