Kathmandu, Aug. 8: Nepali karateka Sanumaya Thing has been selected to compete in the individual kata event at the upcoming Karate World Championships in Egypt. With her participation, Nepal will be making debut appearance at the Karate World Championships.
Thing will make history as the first Nepali athlete to feature at this global event. She is the national champion of Kata and had won gold twice in team kata of the South Asian Karate Championship.
The World Karate Federation officially informed the Nepal Karate Federation of her selection through a formal letter. The championships will be held in Cairo from 27 to 30 November.
Sanumaya earned her spot based on her international ranking, boosted by a strong showing at the Asian Championships in Uzbekistan, where she finished fifth.
She will be coached by Mandekaji Shrestha, a double gold medallist from the 13th South Asian Games. Coach Shrestha hailed the selection as a landmark moment for Nepali karate, calling it both a proud achievement and a golden opportunity.
