By Deepak Prasad Gautam,Birgunj, June 28: The Parsa District Police has apprehended an individual with 319 kilograms of illegal narcotic hashish.
During a press conference held on Thursday, the Parsa District Police Office made public 36-year-old Buddhi Bahadur Syangtang, a resident of Thaha Municipality-12 in Makwanpur district, who possessed the drug.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Gautam Mishra said the media that the contraband was discovered at Parwanipur Chok on Wednesday evening.
The police had intercepted a truck bearing the registration number Province 2–03–001 Kha 6348, which was en route to the Sirsiya Dry Port in Birgunj.
Upon inspection, the hashish was found concealed inside plastic-wrapped packets hidden within sacks in the truck’s cargo area. SP Mishra said that this may be the largest-ever hashish seizure recorded by the Parsa District Police to date.
In addition to the hashish, authorities also confiscated a sum of Rs. 192,000 in cash and a mobile phone from the suspect.
According to SP Mishra, Syangtang is currently in police custody, and the District Court of Parsa has granted a five-day remand order for further investigation.
During initial grilling, the driver admitted to transporting the hashish from Dhading, with the intention of smuggling it into India via the Dry Port customs checkpoint in Birgunj.
Police estimate the market value of the seized 319 kilograms of hashish to be approximately Rs. 10 million.
