By Jaykrishna Yadav,Inaruwa, June 27: Koshi Province Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki has said that everyone must play a role in controlling drug abuse.
Speaking at an interaction programme organised by the District Police Office Sunsari and the FAN District Executive Committee, under the theme “The Role of Police and Society in Drug Abuse Control,” in Inaruwa on Thursday, CM Karki said that drug abuse is an obstacle to the country’s development, prosperity, and good governance, and hence, collective responsibility and action are essential.
Individuals, families, and society must contribute to controlling this social evil, he said.
Similarly, Minister for Internal Affairs and Law of the Province, Rewati Raman Bhandari, said that an anti-drug abuse campaign is being launched as a movement across various districts of the province.
He shared that the provincial government aims to progressively declare wards of rural and urban municipalities as drug abuse-free zones.
He warned that failure to address drug abuse in time could lead to a severe crisis, making it necessary for everyone to pay timely attention.
Inaruwa Mayor Kedar Bhandari stressed the need for regular programmes and interactive sessions related to drug control.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Suman Kumar Timilsina, who is also chief of the District Police Office Sunsari, shared insights on drugs, their impact on society, legal provisions, and reasons behind the increasing number of users, preventive measures, and challenges.
DIG Ishwar Karki, chief of the Koshi Province Police Office, said that drug consumption and addiction were enemies of society and that everyone must join the effort to reduce them.

Meanwhile, Gorkhapatra Daily’s Inaruwa Correspondent Jaya Krishna Yadav was honoured for his contributions played in anti-drug campaign in the district.
On the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, celebrated with the slogan "The Next War is Against Drug Abuse", the Koshi Province Police Office, Biratnagar, honoured Yadav and other anti-drug abuse advocates during a morning rally and award ceremony on Thursday.
Chief Minister Karki honoured Yadav for his role in controlling drug abuse and his contributions through journalism.
Along with Yadav, FAN District Executive Committee advisors Satyanarayan Mehta and Ramesh Bhattarai, members Toya Giri Paudel, Bimala Dhakal, Shambhu Adhikari, and Binita Dahal, were also honoured at the programme.
