Biratnagar records first death from new variant of coronavirus

BY OUR CORRESPONDENT,Biratnagar, June 25: A person has died for the first time in Nepal in Biratnagar from a new variant of coronavirus. 

A 41-year-old woman from Suryodaya Municipality in Ilam passed away on Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment at Nobel Teaching Hospital in Biratnagar.

According to DSP Kopila Chudal, who is also spokesperson for the Morang District Police Office, the woman, who was infected with coronavirus, had been referred to Nobel Teaching Hospital from Birtacity Hospital in Birtamod, Jhapa, for further treatment. She had been admitted to the hospital on Monday and died on Tuesday morning, police reported.

According to Deepesh Rai, the manager of Nobel Teaching Hospital, the woman had shown signs of respiratory problems. She had been ill for a week. Police said that her body had been handed over to her family after her death.

As the spread of the new coronavirus variant increases, the Ministry of Health under Koshi Province Government has confirmed infections in eight people in the province so far. Among them, one woman has died, and the others are undergoing treatment.
