Training to build stakeholders' capacity for curbing human trafficking held

By Siraj Khan, Nepalgunj, April 30: A two-day training for security personnel and stakeholders at border area in Madhuwan of Bardiya to control human trafficking and smuggling has been held.


Anita Chaudhary, deputy mayor of Madhuwan Municipality, informed that the training was organized to build capacity of the stakeholders and security personnel deputed at the border to curb the growing incidents of human trafficking and smuggling.

 

The orientation concluded with a deep understanding about joint effort and action of local government, non-governmental organisations, police personnel and the locals, according to deputy mayor Chaudhary.


The orientation was provided to ward chairs, chief administrative officer, chief of education section, women and children section of the municipality, inspector of armed police force, among other stakeholders.


The training was focused on concept of human trafficking and smuggling, reasons behind this, exploitation, legal provisions, tricks that brokers adopt, ways to curb human trafficking and sale of children, role and efforts of the local governments. Advocate Keshav Koirala, programme coordinator of Maiti Nepal, Nepalgung, and Ishwar BK, programme coordinator of Banke UNESCO Club played the role of facilitators in the orientation.

 

Spokesperson of Madhuwan Municipality, Mek Bahadur Gurung, shared that the programme highlighted on the challenges to curb human trafficking and the need of local government, police, locals and organisations working together to run a joint campaign. The training was held with financial and technical assistance from Plan International Nepal and UNESCO Club, Banke.
