By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Apr. 27: Tirtharam Dangol, former President of the Nepali Congress District Working Committee, Kathmandu and a prominent figure in Nepal’s democratic movement, passed away on Friday at the age of 77. He had been undergoing treatment for prostate cancer and diabetes at Kathmandu Medical College.
Dangol, a founding member of the Nepal Students' Union, was deeply involved in Nepal's political struggles, notably leading Kathmandu district during the 2006 people's movement that ended the autocratic monarchy. He served as a member of the House of Representatives and the Constituent Assembly, and held various key roles within the Nepali Congress.
His contributions to Nepal’s democracy were recognised with numerous accolades, including a gold medal from the Ganeshman Shaheed Smriti Peace Foundation. Dangol also established the "Tej-Tirtha Trust" to honour individuals excelling in fields such as human rights and Nepali language and literature.
"The news of the passing of Tirtharam Dangol, a tireless champion of Nepal's democratic movement, and a person of simple and decent character, has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. The leadership role played by the late Dangol in building the Nepali Congress and in Nepal’s democratic movements will always be remembered by the party,” said Sher Bahadur Deuba, Nepali congress party president.
His funeral took place at Teku Dobhan in Kathmandu at 2:00 pm on Saturday, following a public tribute at the Nepali Congress office from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.
