By Binaya Karna,Kalyanpur (Saptari), Feb. 20: Democracy Day was celebrated in Rajbiraj, the district headquarter of Saptari on Wednesday. However, political party leaders and elected representatives appeared depressed on the occasion.
Democracy Day has been celebrated in Nepal every year since the declaration of democracy on Falgun 7 in 2007 BS.
The morning procession, which started from the premises of the District Coordination Committee Saptari, circled the Med Road in Rajbiraj and turned into a corner meeting at Gajendra Chowk. However, the expected presence of political party leaders and elected representatives was not seen.
Of the 18 Municipalities in the district, only Rupani Rural Municipality Chairman Dinesh Kumar Yadav was present. The heads of the remaining 17 municipalities were not present.
There was a large presence of security personnel, including Chief District Officer Bhola Dahal, in the morning procession, while there was little participation from employees and citizens.
Shiva Narayan Sah, Chief District Coordination Committee, who presided over the corner meeting held at Gajendra Chowk in Rajbiraj after the morning procession, said it was unfortunate that not a single political party leader was present at the Democracy Day programme.
He complained that the parties that fought for democracy and the people's representatives who achieved democratic achievements did not respect democracy. Bhola District Officer, Bhola Dahal, said that the federal democratic republic was established in the country on the foundation of democracy and everyone should respect it.
Thansingh Bhansali, Civil Society Chairman and wars member of Rajbiraj Municipality Ramanand Dev raised questions about the participation of political party leaders and public representatives.
