By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Jan. 30: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the sacrifices of martyrs provide the strength and inspiration to work for change.

Speaking at the main ceremony organised by the government on the premises of Singha Durbar on the occasion of National Martyrs’ Day 2025 on Wednesday, Prime Minister Oli highlighted the significant contributions of martyrs who fought against the Rana regime and for democracy at various times.

He emphasised that it was through the sacrifices and inspiration of martyrs that Nepal achieved a federal democratic republic, where sovereign people are the ultimate source of power.

He urged elected representatives to work to strengthen and sustain the system.

Prime Minister Oli said that political transformations have already taken place, putting an end to the era when those engaged in peaceful movements against authoritarian rule were killed.

He reiterated that the current government is moving forward with clarity towards the goal of a prosperous Nepal and happy Nepali, in line with democratic principles and the rule of law.

“We have established democracy through a long struggle. Democracy does not mean anarchy, it is a developed, civilised, and well-governed system. If any changes are needed in the system or leadership, they must be pursued through democratic means and processes,” he added.

“However, attempts to divide the country and hinder development in the name of democracy will not be acceptable,” said Prime Minister Oli.

“The government is ready to lead for the protection, development, and good governance of the country. We will always remain steadfast on the path shown by the martyrs,” he added.

Likewise, Minister for Home Affairs Ramesh Lekhak said the government was continuously moving ahead to maintain good governance, development, and economic prosperity.

He said that the government is moving forward on the path shown by the martyrs.

He emphasised that strengthening the path of sustainable peace, good governance, prosperity, stability, and development is a national responsibility.

Minister Lekhak said that in line with the constitution’s vision, the nation must ensure sustainable peace and stability while maintaining national unity, progress, and social harmony.

He urged everyone to come together to realise the vision of a just, equal, and prosperous Nepal.

Highlighting the importance of safeguarding the constitution and strengthening the federal democratic governance system as a national necessity, the Home Minister stressed that everyone must work in consensus, coordination, and cooperation to uphold the constitution and reinforce the federal democratic republican system.

Minister Lekhak reiterated that the current government prioritises the rule of law and is committed to working in favour of the citizens.

He added, “On behalf of the government, I reaffirm our commitment: no obstacle, hindrance, or difficulty will prevent us from achieving sustainable peace, good governance, development, and prosperity in the country. We will move forward unwaveringly in the people's interest and fulfil the martyrs' dreams.”

Stressing the Ministry of Home Affairs’ active role in ensuring public security, maintaining peace and stability, and upholding the rule of law, Minister Lekhak assured that the government remains dedicated to guaranteeing law and order, controlling crime, and promoting social justice.

He urged everyone to work together to honour the sacrifices of the martyrs and safeguard democracy.

The ceremony of Singha Durbar was attended by Deputy Prime Ministers, ministers, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Prime Minister’s chief advisors, Chief Secretary of the government, Chief of Army Staff, secretaries, and other distinguished personalities. Earlier, Prime Minister Oli visited the Martyrs’ Memorial in Lainchaur and the Sahid Gate to pay tribute to the martyrs.

The Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday had decided to observe the day at the national level.

Similarly, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) held a memorial ceremony at Martyrs' Park in Lainchaur, honouring both known and unknown martyrs on the final day of Martyrs' Week.

During the tribute ceremony, Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol emphasised the need for a unified leadership to protect Nepal’s political, economic, social and cultural transformation and to safeguard inclusive democracy.

She said that the martyrs who gave their lives for nation and the well-being of the people continue to serve as sources of inspiration and guidance for the future generations.

Khamraj Tiwari, coordinator of the Martyrs' Week Celebration Committee, said, "The martyrs sacrificed their comfort and their lives to end autocratic rule and secure freedom and independence for the people. The conditions we enjoy today are the direct result of their sacrifices. Since our freedom and independence were won through their struggles, we must protect and honour their legacy from a political perspective."

The KMC Martyrs' Week Organising Committee had arranged a week-long series of events to pay tribute to the martyrs. On the final day, a morning rally began from Shanti Batika, passing through Jamal, Kantipath, and Keshar Mahal before reaching Lainchaur.
