blog

Kathmandu, Jan 16: The Democratic Lawyers' Association (DLA) has condemned the assault on senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi, describing it as an attack on the rule of law and democratic principles.

In a press statement issued today, the DLA expressed grave concern over the incident in which Tripathi was attacked by a group of individuals inside the premises of the Kathmandu District Court on Wednesday. The assault occurred after Tripathi represented the victims of Swarnalaxmi Multipurpose Cooperatives Limited in a case.

The DLA stressed that legal practice is a fundamental part of a free judiciary and that it is the constitutional and legal right of advocates to conduct their work in an independent and fearless environment.

It has stated that causing disruption, engaging in a scuffle, assaulting individuals, and chanting slogans while an advocate was leaving the Kathmandu District Court undermines the independence of the judiciary, the rule of law, and democratic procedures. It has called on the relevant authorities to identify those responsible for the assault and bring them under the purview of the law.(RSS)
