Survey of tiger and prey species begins in Banke National Park

Nepalgunj, Dec 20: Survey of tiger and its prey at Banke National Park has begun.     

The survey will collect detailed information about population of tiger, its habitat area and situation. The survey will be conducted for around two months, said chief conservation officer of the Park, Birendra Kandel.     

He added that such type of survey would be carried out in Bardiya once it concludes in Banke.     

Information Officer Mandip Pangeni mentioned that survey has been carried out at Banke National Park through the use of camera trapping, symbol recognition and DNA test technology.     

It would be easier to make further action plan through survey, he added, sharing that it has been expected that conservation and management of tiger and its prey would be made further effective through the use of technology.     

Pangeni expressed the belief that the survey would help in tiger conservation. He said the National Park has been divided into four blocks and grids, and automatic cameras installed in a grid two kilometres area.     

Data related to the activities of the tiger, the prey species and their droppings would be collected with the help of the cameras.     

Automatic cameras have been installed at 109 locations in Banke National Park for making the survey further effective. The survey has been started from Kohalpur, Khadakbar and Buchapur in the western sector of the National Park. Around 20 technical personnel will carry out the survey-related works staying in the jungle for 80 days, it is said.(RSS)
