blog

By Prajwal Khanal,Kathmandu, Dec. 20: As the mercury dips and Kathmandu dons its winter shawl, the valley transforms into a cozy haven of warmth and wonder. But let’s be honest, staying cooped up under blankets with endless cups of tea can only go so far. So why not step outside and embrace the chill? Sure, spots like Nagarkot and Chandragiri Hills are popular picks, but they can get crowded.

The valley, however, has so much more to offer for those who seek nature and a touch of the unknown. Here’s a round-up of some must-visit winter spots around Kathmandu that will make you forget your freezing toes.

Far from the crowds, Phulchoki offers a serene escape for nature lovers. The highest hill around the valley, it’s a haven for snow seekers in winter. “The silence here is incredible," shares Nirnasha Basnet, a frequent hiker. "Walking through the snow-dust is a joy,” she added. Hike up its frost-kissed trails or drive through the winding roads to witness panoramic views of the valley. The forest’s quiet charm and occasional snowfall make it an underrated gem.

Speaking of underrated gem, Kulekhani reservoir (also known as Indra Sarovar) is another stunning spot to soak in the winter vibe. The sublime waters, surrounded by mist-covered hills, create a picture-perfect setting. Warm up with a hearty local meal at nearby villages and explore the area’s natural beauty.

While Dhulikhel is known for its spectacular sunrise views, it’s often overlooked in favour of more crowded spots. This whimsical town offers a pleasant view of Himalayas, charming Newari culture, and peaceful trails that are perfect for winter strolls. Don’t miss the Kali Temple hike for an added touch of spirituality. “Authentic Newari food after a hike is well relished by people who visit here,” said Ishan Tamrakar, owner of a local Newari food café.

Another standout spot is Lele, a quiet village just a short drive away from Kathmandu, is an ideal winter retreat. Known for its agricultural fields and serene ambiance, it’s perfect for a day trip. Enjoy the crisp air, interact with friendly locals, and savour simple yet delicious local cuisine.

Winter may strip trees bare elsewhere, but Godavari’s botanical gardens retain a serene charm. The misty mornings make for a romantic stroll, and the occasional sunbeam breaking through the clouds feels like nature’s warm hug. “I have spotted some rare birds here, many people come for a walk in the nature but miss out on interesting birds that fly by here," shared Prashant Silwal, a local resident.

Last but not the least, a short drive from Kathmandu, Balthali Village offers the perfect winter getaway. Think of cozy cottages, hearty meals, and mornings spent sipping tea while gazing at the frost-covered fields. The rural charm combined with Himalayan vistas will make you wish winter lasted a little longer.

So, there you have it, a list of frosty yet fabulous winter retreats that’ll make you forget your winter blues. Pack your scarves, gloves, and a sense of adventure, and head out to explore the cooler side of the Kathmandu Valley. After all, why hibernate when you can celebrate?
