By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Dec.18: Kantipur Dental College and Teaching Hospital(KDC) has been operating a specialised treatment unit for differently-abled individuals for over six years.
Dr. Budhhiman Shrestha, chairman of KDC, said that the hospital is the first institute to provide services to needy individuals through a dedicated centre. He added that the programme not only focuses on treatment but trained dental professionals and hygienists. It also conducts outreach camps to identify oral health issues of needy people.
The unit, Oral Care Centre for Special Needs, was established with the support of Rotary International District 3292, the Rotary Club of Kathmandu North, and the Rotary Club of U-Ku Taiwan District 3490 on October 21, 2018. The centre has been treating many differently abled individuals who have visited the facility.
Dr. Pratisksya Shrestha, director at KDC, said, "We have conducted several camps in special care homes and referred individuals with oral issues to the centre for further treatment." She pointed out that individuals with special needs commonly suffer from tooth decay, misaligned teeth, gum disease and other oral health issues.
The project of Rotary has officially concluded last Saturday but still KDC has continued to provide its services uninterrupted. Following the initiation of the project, a team of dentists from the Rotary Club of U-Ku Taipei provided specialized training to KDC's dental specialists, dentists, and hygienists on how to treat differently-abled individuals.
