Demand of sheep declines

By Our Correspondent,Tamghas, Oct. 3: On the eve of the great festival Bada Dashain, Churamani Bhattarai, 60, from Dhorpatan in Baglung district has come to Tamghas, the headquarters of Gulmi district, to sell sheep. But he is surprised that there is no demand for sheep in the market as it was in the past years. Bhattarai lamented that even though he brought 50 sheep, they were not sold as before.

He in sheep trading for the past 10 years, and said that the business this year is not like it was in previous years. Stating that live animals are sold at the rate of Rs. 1,000 per kilo, he said that the price of a sheep ranges from Rs. 13,000 to Rs. 20,000.

He said that he used to take sheep to sell in the markets of Gulmi, Palpa, Arghakhanchi and Parbat districts. 

Narrating his experience of selling more than 100 sheep in previous years, he said that although the target for this year is the same, he is not sure that the target would be met.  He said that earlier, people used to buy sheep during Dashain and eat together with their friends, but now it seems that the trend is gradually disappearing.

He used to earn more than Rs. 100,000 from the sale of the sheep he reared and bought.
