By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Dec. 22: Nagarjun Municipality-1, Kathmandu successfully conducted free cataract surgeries for 45 elderly people on Saturday.

Ward Chairman Rameshwar Lama said that the surgeries were funded entirely through the ward’s administrative initiatives and budget.

According to him, the surgeries were performed with technical support and expertise provided by Matrika Eye Centre in Baneshwar.

The beneficiaries were identified during an eye and cataract screening health camp organised by the ward on December 7 and their surgeries were conducted on Saturday.

Although during the eye health camp, 116 people were diganosed with cataract problems, only 45 contacted the ward office for surgeries, said Lama.

Lama said that undergoing cataract surgery in private hospitals costs at least Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 30,000 per person.

Hence, the ward undertook this initiative to ensure access to affordable eye care for the ward residents. The ward also arranged free transportation for the patients, he said.
