Minister Bhattarai suggests technology as a literacy indicator

Bhaktapur, Sept 8: Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Bidya Bhattarai, has said new curriculum should be devised by making technology as one of the indicators of literacy.     

Addressing a programme organized on the occasion of the 58th International Literacy Day here Sunday, Minister Bhattarai viewed education could not be developed in absence of literacy and development not forwarded in absence of education. So, timely review of these issues is essential, she underlined.     

The programme was organized by the Education and Human Resource Development Centre, Bhaktapur. She however admitted that lone efforts of government were not sufficient to meet this goal. "All stakeholders' engagement and assistance help realize the ambition of eradicating illiteracy," the Minister stressed.     

According to her, the government is committed to providing opportunity for all to study in their respective mother tongues. For it to happen, formulation and enforcement of new policy is required, she reminded.     

The Education Minister honoured six women schools which provide education to women up to Grade 10. The schools receiving the honour are- Astha Women School, Bhaktapur; Gyan Jyoti School, Kathmandu; Utprerana Women School, Kathmandu; Namuna Women School, Kathmandu; and Sadhana Women School, Kathmandu.     

The Centre honoured 43-year-old Dil Maya Tamang who is currently pursuing her Masters in Journalism. She had completed her SEE from the Gyan Jyoti Women School, Kathmandu.(RSS)
