Contribution of Motiram Bhatta in Journalism highlighted

By TRN Online, Kathmandu, Sep 2: The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of Tribhuvan University discussed the role of Motiram Bhatta in Nepali Journalism lauded on Monday.

Speakers at the programme of 159th Moti Jayanti on Department have suggested that Motiram Bhatta's contribution in the literary and critics fields should be discussed, but his contribution in the field of journalism should also be discussed.

According to experts, he was the first to publish a Nepali-language magazine by publishing a literary magazine in the Nepali language "Gorkha Bharat Jeevan" while staying in Banaras, India.

Experts believe that Bhatta should be called the first Nepali language journalist. Bhatta in 1938 BS, published the magazine 'Gorkha Bharat Jeevan'. The magazine published by him is described as the first magazine in the Nepali language. He was born on 1866 September 8 on the day of Kushe Aunsi.

KK Karmacharya, the former chancellor of the Nepal Fine Arts Academy, said that Motiram Bhatta had a multi-dimensional personality and his contribution is enough than discussed. He said that there is a need for fine arts and beautification in journalism, and he said that pictorial presentation is important to make the newspaper attractive. He recalled that Bhatta also gave priority to fine art and beauty.

Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Sociology Prof. Dr. Gobind Sukum Sharma mentioned that Moti Ram has also made an incomparable contribution to the field of research. 

Saying that how much he contributed in a short time is more important than how long anyone lived Sharma added that Bhatta made a great contribution to Nepal and Nepali people by living for only 30 years.

Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication Dr Kundan Aryal said that there is a need for an open society for the promotion of journalism and there is communication work from any genre. Discussing that printing itself was a kind of revolution, he said that the publication published by Motiram Bhatta at that time was a kind of revolution.

Saying, Bhatta's literary contribution has been discussed a lot, but his contribution to journalism has been overshadowed, Dr Aryal informed that the department organized a program for the first time to highlight this. To do journalism, it is necessary to know its skills, knowledge and concepts, he said.

Senior writer and journalist Vijay Chalise said that since Motiram Bhatta did the job of introducing Bhanubhakta by writing his biography, his position is higher than Bhanubhakta. He pointed out the need for more research on Bhatta's creative style and thinking. 

Head of the Nepali Department, TU, Prof. Dr. Krishna Prasad Neupane said that Motiram Bhatta had made an incomparable contribution to the growth of Nepali literature. He said that Bhatta's contribution to the introduction of Ghazal in Nepal was also a leading one and he had promoted the printing sector by doing many publications during his lifetime.

Chief of Nepali Language of Ratna Rajya Lakshmi (RR) Campus Dr Bidula Ghimire said that Bhatta introduced the Ghazal genre in Nepal by converting Urdu and Persian into Nepali. She said that he was a great man born in an era.

The programme was chaired by the Head of the Journalism and Mass Communication Department Dr Kundan Aryal, and lecturers Dr Devraj Aryal and Dr Ghamraj Luitel discussed the various contributions of Motiram Bhatta.
