Humla's indigenous agro products worth Rs. 4.7 million supplied to Kathmandu

By Our Correspondent,Humla, Aug. 5: Indigenous agricultural products worth Rs. 4.7 million have been supplied from Humla to Kathmandu in a year.

In order to promote the local agro products, the Food Management and Trading Company (FMTC) purchased the food grains from a rural municipality of Humla and supplied them to Kathmandu.

Krishna Prasad Adhikari, chief of Humla Branch, FMTC, said that indigenous agro products worth Rs. 6.1 million purchased from Simkot Rural Municipality had been supplied to Kathmandu in the last fiscal year alone. 

The rural municipality purchased the food grains from farmers and sold them to the FMTC, Humla Branch. 

He said that about 284 quintals of local food grains were purchased by FMTC, Humla Branch and transported them by air to Surkhet. 

Of this, around Rs. 4.7 million were spent on the purchase of food grains, while around Rs. 1.3 million was spent by the branch on transportation.

According to him, local crops purchased and transported from Simkot Rural Municipality and supplied to Kathmandu included 174 quintals of chino rice, 6.50 quintals of kaguno (foxtail millet), 2 quintals of buckwheat, 91.60 quintals of beans and 10 quintals of uwa. 

Earlier, indigenous agro products of Humla were not supplied like this outside the district. 

After signing an agreement between the FMTC and Simkot Rural Municipality for the purchase of local grains, the way to supply was opened and they started supplying the food grains to Kathmandu from last fiscal year.

The price of supplied local products is determined by the purchasing committee formed at the local level. The local agro products will be supplied regularly from the district. 

FMTC, Humla Branch said that some of the grains supplied from the district are in Surkhet and all transported to Kathmandu have been sold. 

It is said that the food grains in Surkhet are also being prepared to be taken to Kathmandu.
