Amendment in constitution won't be regression: PM Oli

blog

Kathmandu, Aug 2: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli urged the law practitioners not to believe in the illusion that amendment in constitution would bring forth regression.

In a meeting with the delegation of Nepal Bar Association at Singha Durbar on Friday, PM Oli urged them to believe in people's mandate since, he added, the constitution had a provision for amendment if two-thirds of the parliamentarians mull it.

"Two-thirds of parliamentarians can amend constitution. The amendment is considered on this basis," said, reminding, "We have come to this stage after enduring imprisonment and struggle while fighting for democracy."

The PM wondered how they could imagine constitution amendment pushes democracy on edge.

"We do not accept regression. Amendment is a measure to iron out the issues emerged while implementing constitution and to address issues pertaining to progression, good-governance and development," PM Oli reminded.

The Head of the Government further viewed the judiciary could deliver verdict by following the principle of check and balance.

He clarified that there was no favourable economic situation to hike remunerations for the civil employees. The implementation of the verdict of the court on salary hike will also face practical problems, according to him.

Prime Minister Oli opined that the timeframe of six months proposed by the Bar to finalize impeachment proposal against office bearers of the constitutional bodies should be further shortened.

Regarding Bar's demand to remove parliamentary hearing for the appointment of judges, PM Oli asked legal professional to reconsider it because the constitution itself had such provision.

Also attending the meeting were Attorney General Ramesh Badal, Chief Secretary Leela Devi Gadtaula and former MP Ram Narayan Bidari, among others.(RSS)
