By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, June 12: Former Chairman of the Council of Ministers and former Chief Justice Khilraj Regmi has said that 'Gorkhapatra' is a valuable asset of the state.
While observing the 'Historical Photo Exhibition' at the Gorkhapatra Corporation on Tuesday, he emphasised that the Gorkhapatra Daily, which has maintained unshakable credibility in print journalism for 124 years, is a government property that needs enhanced protection.
Regmi highlighted that the photo exhibition successfully offers a brief and factual glimpse into the transformation of Nepali society from various perspectives, including economic, social, agricultural and political.
He remarked, "Gorkhapatra has succeeded in maintaining the pride of reliable information through news. Similarly, through photographs, it has preserved every societal activity, including national/international events, social changes, natural disasters and political changes."
He acknowledged the competition in print media, noting that despite the rise of many news outlets, people still turn to Gorkhapatra for credible information.
While observing the photo exhibition, Regmi recalled being briefly affected by a landslide at Krishnabhir, a place known for frequent landslides, while travelling to Hetaunda. A photograph of the landslide is displayed in the exhibition.
The exhibition's photos, depicting significant events from 1979, 1989, and 1990, along with everyday scenes such as bathing in stone streams and washing green vegetables, effectively illustrate the rapid transformation of Nepali society.
Regmi suggested that future exhibitions should categorise photos of economic, social, and political changes, as well as natural disasters, to help visitors better understand them.
He also expressed confidence that maintaining the credibility of Gorkhapatra is a heavy responsibility for its leaders, a standard that he believes will continue to be upheld.
