By Thakur Prasad Acharya,Myagdi, May 13: Lomanthang Rural Municipality launched an afforestation campaign with the slogan 'Our Campaign: Green Lomanthang, Happy Lomanthang'.
The campaign aims to make Lomanthang in Upper Mustang, which shares a border with China, lush with vegetation.
Tasi Nharvu Gurung, Chairman of the rural municipality, informed that 10,000 pipal saplings would be planted in the barren hills of Lomanthang in the current fiscal year.
He said, "The tree plantation campaign has been conducted to mitigate the natural disasters caused by climate change and to conserve biodiversity for environmental benefits."
He said that the rural municipality had started a tree plantation campaign in the last fiscal year by planting 5,000 saplings.
This year, the rural municipality plans to plant 10,000 saplings with 2,000 saplings in each ward, he added.
Local representatives, members of Local Mother's Group and Youth Club and locals participated in the campaign.
Lomanthang, known as the city of mud, is a popular tourist destination due to its natural and cultural uniqueness. It is also a historic centre of Tibetan culture. Historical caves, Tibetan culture, the Himalayas and cliffs are what attract tourists to the area.
