By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Apr. 27: Making curriculum relevant to contemporary needs, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has expressed the need to ignite the desire to stay and do something within the country in the new generation.

Prime Minister Prachanda made the remarks while addressing the 12th Convocation Ceremony of Purbanchal University in Gothgaun, Morang, on Friday.

As per the University, 2,900 students who graduated from different programmes of the University at the M. Phil, Master and Bachelor levels were provided with the certificates during the convocation programme.

“The curricula in our education system need a drastic change to ignite the feeling of nationalism among the youths, retain them within the country and prevent the worrying trend of brain drain,” said the Prime Minister.

He suggested that the updated curriculum should match the technological advancements of the present-day world.

“There is a lack of practical education to connect the new generation with development. The country is seeking contributions from the new generation. The country should be able to utilise the capabilities of at least 40 per cent of the total youths,” said PM Prachanda.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister lamented the trend of pressuring students to learn something by just mugging up the subject and recommended the universities focus on making learning fun and impactful.

Purbanchal University was recently granted permission to start medical education (MBBS and above) after the Cabinet decided to allow the university to utilise Koshi Hospital as its teaching hospital.

“Purbanchal University should construct the necessary infrastructure and begin medical education at the earliest as per the law. It will assure affordable and accessible medical services to the people nearby,” said PM Prachanda.

“Universities should be able to produce manpower required for the country. Purbanchal University should not only conserve and utilise our traditional knowledge but also make youths capable of tackling modern challenges. This university should also contribute towards modernising agriculture,” PM Prachanda stressed.

He also expressed the need for Purbanchal University to conduct intense research in traditional crops/herbs of the region, such as cardamon, tea and rudraksha among others, and help promote them in the international market.

Likewise, the Prime Minister informed that the government was improving road connectivity throughout the country. “From the next fiscal year, the construction of Biratnagar Ring Road, which has several benefits, will be initiated in a planned manner,” he added.
