Media delegation from China visits Gorkhapatra

By TRN Online, Kathmandu, Jan 14: A media delegation from China’s Yunnan Province paid a courtesy visit to Gorkhapatra Corporation today.

Executive Chairman of the Gorkhapatra Corporation Bishnu Prasad Subedi and General Manager Lal Bahadur Airi welcomed the 10-member delegation led by Peng Bin, deputy director general of publicity department of the CPC Yunnan provincial party committee and chairman of Yunnan provincial civilizational office.

Welcoming the delegates, executive Chairman Subedi lauded the visit as an opportunity to exchange views and plan for cooperation.

“I would like to express sincere gratitude to Yunnan Team for providing such an opportunity of visit and interaction with Gorkhapatra,” he said

“Gorkhapatra Corporation (Gorkhapatra Sanshan) is a glorious Nepalese media organization owned and run by the Government of Nepal. Since May 6, 1901 AD, the Corporation has published Gorkhapatra Daily, Nepal's premier national newspaper and the country's oldest daily. In addition, the Corporation has been publishing The Rising Nepal, Nepal's first English daily since May 6, 1901. Both newspapers have the largest reach throughout the nation”.

Similarly, the corporation publishes three magazines-   Madhupark, a monthly literary magazine promoting literature and art; Yubamanch, a youth magazine; and Muna, a children's magazine, he said.

The Corporation has a strong foundation for a digital platform, with distinct news portals for two dailies and a significant social media presence. Our magazines have their websites as well, said the executive Chairman.

“Gorkhapatra is more than just a newspaper; it is a national treasure that represents the complete history of country. It is a historic institution of Nepal's journalism. It has paid a significant contribution in the development of professional journalism in Nepal. It has been also regarded as a prestigious school of Nepalese journalists. It has been playing a key role in informing and educating people. It made a prominent contribution in the social reform and cultural promotion of the nation. This organization has been staying as an active eye witness of every political change and movement of Nepal”.

The executive Chairman appreciated the Chinese contribution to Nepal’s development and said, “We have been in good relation and warm interaction with Media organizations of China including Xinhua News Agency, CNS. We are also interested to enhance this relation and interaction.”

On the occasion, general manager Airi expressed his belief that the visit to the Gorkhapatra by the media delegation from Yunnan province of China could enhance media cooperation between the two neigbours.

Similarly, acting editor in chief of the Gorkhapatra Daily, Shiva Kumar Bhattarai, said that the Gorkhapatra has been publishing news items in 41 national languages of Nepal and thus contributing to consolidation of national unity.


On his part, leader of the media delegation Peng mentioned about Nepal-China relations dating back to ancient times and said that his delegation’s visit to Gorkhapatra was aimed at initiating a new cooperation between the media organisations.

“We are interested in having cooperation with the Gorkhapatra Corporation,” he said.

 On the occasion, the delegates were presented with the replica of the first issue of the Gorkhapatra daily.
